Marketing Prompts

96 prompts 10 guides

The whole marketing library — 89 prompts across search, email, social, paid, brand, conversion and press, and which of the eight sub-packs you actually need.

The whole marketing library, and how it fits together

This is the broadest tag on the site — 89 prompts spanning demand generation, search, email, social, paid media, brand, conversion, and press. It works as the entry point to eight more specific packs, each with its own pillar and its own argument.

Rather than restate them, this page does the thing a hub should do: says what each pack is for, what it assumes, and which one you actually need.

One observation worth making first, because it runs through all of them. Every channel covered here has become harder to measure in the same period. Search increasingly answers in place rather than sending a click. Apple made the email open rate uninterpretable. The platforms took the targeting levers and report on their own performance. Privacy changes removed a large share of the tracking that attribution models were built on. The common thread across every sub-pack is the same discipline: decide what you would need to observe to know this worked, before you spend the money — because the reporting you get by default is increasingly generated by an interested party.

Getting found

SEO and content strategy — 68% of US Google searches now end without a click, and ranking and being read have come apart. That pack is about which queries still produce visits, writing so a machine can extract a correct answer, and maintaining what you already published rather than adding to it. Start with Analyze Search Intent Before You Write.

Social media and community — Instagram engagement is down to 0.45% and distribution is interest-based, so followers no longer buy reach and every post is judged cold. It also covers social as a search surface, which is where a growing share of discovery moved. Start with Choose the Social Platforms Worth Your Time.

PR and communications — 86% of journalists say a pitch started some of their work and 73% reject pitches for irrelevance, which makes targeting the product and the pitch the smallest artifact in the process. Start with Decide Whether Your News Is Actually Newsworthy.

Turning attention into pipeline

Lead generation and demand gen — the mechanics of capture, scoring, nurture and handoff, built on the fact that in B2B a lead is one member of a buying group that will eventually contain a dozen people. Start with Build a Target Account List From Your Best Customers.

Email and lifecycle marketing — Gmail and Yahoo turned deliverability into a hard gate, and Apple made the open rate meaningless. That pack covers the infrastructure first, then the automated messages that actually carry revenue. Start with Fix Your Email Deliverability.

Conversion rate optimization — the research and evidence discipline around testing, including the uncomfortable fact that most sites cannot run a readable A/B test and should be doing qualitative research instead. Start with Diagnose a Leaky Conversion Funnel.

Paid ads and performance marketing — the platforms now own targeting and optimisation, so creative volume and independent measurement are the levers you have left. Start with Pressure-Test Creative Before You Spend Money on It.

Being chosen

Brand and creative — distinctiveness is the scarce asset now that competent execution is effectively free and generative tools pull everything toward the mean. Start with Write Positioning and Messaging That Differentiates You.

Four prompts sit above the channel split because they apply to all of it: Write Positioning and Messaging That Differentiates You, Write a Creative Brief That Gets Good Work Back, Pressure-Test Creative Before You Spend Money on It, and Write a Client Case Study From a Finished Project.

The creative brief is the one most worth running first if you work with anyone else — an agency, a freelancer, a designer, a contractor. Most disappointing creative work is a briefing failure, and it is far cheaper to fix on the way in.

Adjacent packs that carry marketing work

Ecommerce — for physical-product businesses, where the money is made after the click, in product data and per-SKU margin and the return.

Partnerships, channel and affiliates — including the two affiliate prompts, Design an Affiliate Program That Pays for Incremental Sales and Police an Affiliate Program and Cut the Bad Actors. Both are built around incrementality, because an affiliate paid on last click will happily bill you for demand that was already coming.

Nonprofit fundraising — which is marketing under harder constraints: Write a Case for Support People Will Actually Give To and Build a Monthly Giving Program Worth the Setup are persuasion and retention problems where the product is a decision to give money away.

B2B sales — the other side of the handoff. Define the Marketing-to-Sales Lead Handoff is the prompt that belongs to both and gets owned by neither.

Where to start if you are not sure

If you are trying to work out why the numbers moved, start in data analysis rather than in a channel pack — most channel diagnoses fail because the measurement was wrong, not the channel.

If you are spending money and cannot tell what it produced, start with CRO and paid, in that order.

If you have no distribution at all, pick one of search, social or press and commit to it. The failure mode at that stage is a thin presence in all three.

If you are rebuilding, start with positioning. Everything downstream inherits it, and no amount of channel work rescues a proposition nobody can restate.

Where this stops

These prompts produce plans, drafts and briefs from information you supply. They will not invent benchmarks, search volumes, competitor figures, or performance claims, and none of them can promise a result — every recommendation on these pages is a hypothesis you should measure. Advertising claims, endorsement disclosures, email consent, and privacy obligations are governed by law that varies by market and belongs with someone qualified in yours.
