Email and Lifecycle Marketing Prompts

The open rate became noise the day Apple started pre-fetching images, and Gmail and Yahoo turned deliverability into a hard gate. Measure clicks; fix the infrastructure first.

The open rate is noise, and the inbox is now a gate

Two structural changes have made most email reporting misleading and most email programmes fragile.

The first is measurement. Apple's Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches remote images through Apple's proxy when a message is delivered, not when it is read. Every tracking pixel fires regardless of whether a human ever saw the message. For any list with meaningful Apple Mail usage, the open rate is now a delivery signal wearing an engagement costume — inflated, uninterpretable, and completely unsuitable as a success metric or as an A/B test's decision variable.

The second is access. Gmail and Yahoo both publish bulk-sender requirements that turn deliverability from a best practice into a gate. Both require the spam complaint rate to stay below 0.30%. Both require SPF and DKIM with domain alignment for DMARC. Both require one-click unsubscribe via a functioning List-Unsubscribe header on marketing and subscribed mail. These are not recommendations that improve inbox placement at the margin; failing them means the mail does not arrive.

So the discipline of this pack is: measure clicks and conversions rather than opens, and treat deliverability as infrastructure that has to be correct before any creative work matters.

Fix the gate first

Fix Your Email Deliverability is the first prompt for anyone whose numbers have quietly declined without an obvious cause. Authentication records, alignment, complaint and bounce rates, list hygiene, sending reputation, and the difference between a partial and a complete setup — partial configurations now fail outright where they used to degrade gracefully.

A complaint rate ceiling of 0.30% is tighter than it sounds. It is roughly three complaints per thousand delivered messages, and a single badly-targeted campaign to an unengaged segment can breach it. Which makes Segment Your Email List So Messages Land a deliverability prompt as much as a relevance one: sending to people who do not want it is now technically as well as commercially expensive.

Audit Your Email Program is the periodic sweep — what is sending, to whom, on what trigger, and whether anyone has looked at the automated messages since they were set up. Most programmes contain at least one automation still running against assumptions that changed years ago.

Lifecycle before campaigns

Map Your Lifecycle Emails End to End is the structural prompt. Most programmes grew by accretion — a welcome series here, a win-back there — and nobody has ever drawn the whole thing, which is why customers routinely receive contradictory messages on the same day and why obvious gaps persist for years.

The revenue-bearing automations follow from that map. Write a Customer Onboarding Email Sequence covers the window where retention is actually decided. Recover Abandoned Carts and Checkouts addresses the largest single recoverable loss for most ecommerce businesses. Recover Failed Payments Without Losing the Customer covers involuntary churn, which is the most profitable email work almost nobody prioritises — the customer already wants the product, the card simply failed, and the entire problem is a sequencing and tone question. Win Back Churned Customers closes the loop, and is honest about which segments are not worth the send.

Improve Your Transactional Emails is the underrated one. Receipts, shipping notices, and password resets get opened at rates marketing mail never approaches, and most of them are default templates nobody has read since setup.

The campaigns that remain

Plan a Newsletter People Stay Subscribed To treats the newsletter as a recurring commitment rather than a broadcast slot — the relevant question being what makes someone open the next one, not this one.

Write a Product or Feature Announcement Email and Plan a Promotion or Sale Email Campaign cover the two set-piece sends. Both are written to resist the discount reflex — a promotion that trains a list to wait for a discount has raised its own future acquisition cost.

Write Email Copy for the Preview Pane and the Thumb is craft-level and matters more than it sounds. The decision to open is made from a sender name, a subject line, and a preview string, on a phone, in about a second.

Write an Annual Appeal That Doesn't Sound Like Everyone Else's is the nonprofit sector's highest-stakes send of the year — see the nonprofit pack for the fundraising context around it.

Testing that produces knowledge

A/B Test Your Emails Properly is where the measurement problem becomes concrete. Testing subject lines on open rate is now testing a metric that Apple partly generates. The prompt insists on a decision metric further down the funnel, a sample size worked out in advance, and a stopping rule set before the send — because peeking at an email test and calling it when it looks good is how teams accumulate a folder of winners that never compound into a better programme.

Where this stops

These prompts draft and plan; they do not know your jurisdiction's rules. Consent, unsubscribe handling, sender identification and data retention are governed by law that varies by market — CAN-SPAM, GDPR and PECR being the common ones — and none of that is settled by a prompt. The technical requirements cited here come from Gmail's and Yahoo's published sender guidelines, which change; check the current version before a large migration.

  • Apple Mail Privacy Protection: remote content is pre-fetched on delivery via Apple's proxy, firing tracking pixels independently of whether a message was read
